Weekly Amazement

1. Lab grown plants

Scientists have succeeded in growing wood and fiber in lab settings and it has lowered natural farming and avoided damages from environmental changes. It also reduces forestry impact such as by growing a wood table in a lab. In the future we don’t even need to cut down any trees so it helps preserve forests having a positive impact on global warming issues.

2. SpaceX and Starlink

By 2025, SpaceX will finish launching 12000 satellites for the Starlink network covering every corner of earth except the north and south pole. CEO Elon Musk’s goal is to provide internet access to everyone anywhere at a very low price. I am not certain how telecommunications companies can respond to this positive disruption. As a consumer, I can’t wait to be free from my expensive data plan. On the other hand, Falcon9 has proven to withstand very strong wind and land safely after constant improvement along the many flights.

3. End-to-End is the trend

DoorDash, Netflix, Tesla, and Zillow are great examples. However, there are certain services that have yet to be running full end-to-end models. We would love to see something such as website building and car purchase to be fully automatic end-to-end services. You go to the website inputting all the necessary information and the products will just directly deliver straight to you without any troublesome back and forth human interactions. It saves time and can provide better customer support with the help and software keeping better records to avoid human errors.

Recent Thoughts

I have always felt that technology is advancing at an unprecedented speed. Who would have thought a smartphone able to manage almost every aspect of our lives. I already forgot the joy of first having access to the internet for the speed of 47kb/s. If now the speed goes under 10MB, it will be the end of the world to me. When I look back, I appreciate the convenience these technologies have brought us and how we naturally adapt to the upgrades. Software and IT industries provide enormously financial power and opportunities. I am sure everyone has written an essay of what they want to be in the future and the answers were quite diverse having everything such as lawyer, doctor, police, bank and etc. However, 80% of my college friends get into the high tech industry or at least hired in the IT department of certain traditional industries. Thus, instead of treating IT industries as an individual industry, I think of it as an indispensable element for all industries. It is why I believe the subject computer science should be a mandatory one at school just like math and science. To be straight, schools and companies must raise the bar for technical capabilities through education and mandatory training. Otherwise, these businesses such as taxi drivers, telecommunications, and many labor jobs will soon be out of the pictures completely. The week of thoughts ends here.
