Thought of the week – Communicating effectively among teams
Our organization has run into high severe issues that impacted 41 million transactions. Glad those errors were not client facing and only backend issues impacting a few entities such as payment charges and fulfillment. We were contacted on Friday night pulling a few of the members into the group. We spent quite some time to analyze and found the root cause which the outage on Monday has shut down a essential functions causing 41 millions transactions to stuck. Various actions had to be taken across teams to redrive affected orders. One concern is that we are requested to resolve the redrive during weekend. We negotiated to have engineers on the other team to do the work after I did a demo and gave instructions on how to do so. The lesson learnt in this is that we must have customer obsession but remember that the employees are also the customers of the company. Thus, we need to identity the best solution to balance workload and to delegate necessary tasks to other teams. Lowering the cost and optimizing the result are of great importance to leaders’ decision and my manager’s handling for ownership and tasks assignment in this case enlightened me. I learnt how to look at the problem itself and find the best solutions without overloading yourselves by being a yes man.
